AFCON 2021: Nigeria Humbles Egypt in AFCON Group D Game

Nigeria on January 11 surprised Egypt as the Super Eagles obtained their most important three point in the opening match in Group D.

At the 30th minutes broke the deadlock as Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal sank the Pharaohs of Egypt to a shocking defeat.

Staged at the Roumdé Adjia stadium in Garoua, the clash between Egypt and Nigeria was the most awaited which gave the public the feeling of the day.

Throughout the game, Egypt were lacklustre for much of the proceedings, managing just one shot in the opening 70 minutes.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, completely absent as he found himself isolated up front with Nigeria dictating play from all angles. At the 71st minutes, Salah came so close in scoring but hit a hard rock.

Nigeria will face Sudan in Group D on Saturday January 15 while Egypt take on Guinea-Bissau. Nigeria and Egypt were meeting today for the 9th time in a continental tournament.

With today’s victory, Nigeria broke Egypt’s unbeaten record, as the Pharaohs have been unbeaten in their last 16 group matches at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Before now, Egypt’s last defeat in the group phase was in 2004 when they lost 2-1 against Algeria. In 2019, Nigeria beat Egypt 1-0 in a friendly match.
