Cameroon dispels rumors of AFCON withdrawal

In 2019 Cameroon indicated their readiness to host the African Football jamboree, but slow construction works led to the withdrawal of hosting rights.

Cameroon is host of AFCON 2021 with 24 teams for the first time and has been struggling lately with rumours of withdrawal.

CAF postponed the AFCON 2021 draw ceremony initially billed for June 25, 2021, to a yet to be announced date thus, ignited the rumour machine.

That Cameroon is not ready to host 2021, countries like Algeria ready to step in and take over hosting.

The draw site proposed, the Warda Multipurpose Sports Complex hosted the Women’s African Football Championship, the African Nations Football Championship, CHAN and satisfied all CAF technical exigencies, the minister said.  

“The plan of the hall and scenery were presented with the mascot among others were already transmitted to CAF. 

Recently, CAF changed the logo and the competition is now known as the AFCON Total Energy Cameroon 2021, the Minister said. He reiterated government ‘s firm commitment to make AFCON a major priority.

There has been doubts as to the ability Garoua to host a pool, given the limited lodging facilities.

According to Kombi Mouelle, there are already three hotels for three teams in garoua, and Benue Hotel is likely to host a team given that 64 rooms are already available.

Recently CAF approved five more stadia and Garoua is among them.

“Cameroon has eight (8) stadia and 27 training grounds, above FIFA and Caf requirements of six (6) stadia and 18 training grounds”, the sports boss said.

“In August Cameroon would be able to host matches at the Olembe Sports Complex which would also serve as host of the opening and closing ceremony”, he added. 

Bafousssam roads has been upgraded between the training grounds and the competition stadium.  In Bafang and Bangoua training grounds are under construction.

“AFCON  2021 is an is ‘bagged’ for Cameroon and its attribution to others countries is not foreseeable”, Kombi Mouelle concluded.   

A CAF mission led by the vice-president, Veron Omgbwa to install a CAF office and hold talks with the local organizing committee from June 14-16.
