AFCON 2023: Egypt Secures Last Minute Goal To Share Points With Mozambique

It was a thrilling game in Group B as the competition favorite, Egypt, survived a potential defeat to secure a draw against Mozambique, thanks to a penalty in the final minutes of the game.

The Pharaohs took an early lead in the second minute of the game, courtesy of Mostafa Mohamed’s strike. Despite some chances, Mozambique found themselves unable to balance the scoreline.

However, Egypt’s lead was short-lived as Mozambique came back with renewed spirit after halftime. In the 56th minute, Witness Ouembo equalized for Mozambique, and three minutes later, Clesio Bauque scored another goal, putting the Pharaohs’ hopes in jeopardy.

Realizing that their chances were slipping away, Egypt mounted pressure, but Mozambique’s compact defense and their goalkeeper made several saves at the end of regular time.  Egypt was awarded a penalty, allowing Mohamed Salah to seal a 2-2 draw.

This is the fourth time that Mozambique has been drawn in the same group as Egypt in their five appearances at the AFCON. The previous three encounters all ended in favor of Egypt, resulting in 2-0 victories for them in 1986, 1998, and 2010.

Heading into the game, Egypt was considered the favorite due to their impressive track record. With this being Egypt’s record-breaking 26th appearance at the AFCON, they were relying on their experience.

Having been crowned champions seven times, more than any other side, and reaching the final in five of their last six participations, Egypt meant business.

Moreover, Egypt has only lost one of their last 19 AFCON group matches, a 1-0 defeat against Nigeria in the 2021 edition, which also happens to be the only goal the Pharaohs have conceded in their last 11 group games.

In 2023, Egypt won eight of their ten matches across all competitions, with their only defeat coming against Tunisia in a friendly last September (3-1).

On the other hand, this is Mozambique’s fifth AFCON appearance and their first since 2010, when they faced Egypt in the group stage, losing 2-0. In the last four editions, they finished at the bottom of their group, a record that motivated them to work harder. Mozambique has yet to win any of its previous 12 matches at the AFCON.
