WAFCON 2022: Coach Unveils Lionesses Preparatory Programme

Indomitable Lionesses Coach, Gabriel Zabo has unveiled the training programme of his squad as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON Morocco 2022.

The programme comes a few days after the draw in which Cameroon was drawn in Group B considered as a group of death with Zambia, Tunisia and Togo.

Going by Zabo, “Group B is open, with three favourites. Tunisia eliminated Equatorial Guinea and we know their worth being the only team apart from Nigeria that has won the trophy twice.”

Zambia it should be recalled, stopped Cameroon’s Olympic ambition and have in their ranks Babra Banda who scored a hat trick back to in an Olympic tournament. Togo are the only small team on paper.

“There is need to come out of the group stage, to qualify for the quarter finals and for the World Cup, then remain focused on the competition.  I am not keen on a particular opponent, we are focused on the preparations. We have to prepare well and Zambia is the first game. We would take the one opponent one after the other. We need to be among the first to have it easy in the quarter final.”, Zabo maintained.

“After the draw, we now know which country to approach for a friendlies, Zabo stated.

Cameroon is set to start preps on the May 21, 2022 with local and foreign based players already liberated by their clubs. After the second training camp, the squad is set to move out of Cameroon for a final training camp probably in Spain, Zabo revealed.

The coach added that Cameroon would have sparing partners to evaluate the preps as plans are being finalized.

Cameroon is going to WAFCON with a huge ambition, lift the trophy that has eluded them for years though having qualification for the World Cup at the back of the mind.

“If we do not win the Nations Cup it means we have not progressed. We need to go with a firm ambition to lift the trophy, and we have the potential, the human resources at our disposal. What we require is good organization and preparation that reflects the image of a team that want to caress the prestigious trophy”, Cameroon coach stressed.

The top four teams qualify directly for the World Cup while two others would qualify through play-offs.

Cameroon is likely to play Senegal paired in Group A with host Morocco prior to their acclimatization in Spain from where they would move to Casablanca the base of Group B teams.

Commenting on the quality of his squad, Zabo said, “We may be in a reconstruction phase but we have tried not to destroy everything. We have leaders to lean on, but, we would invest on younger players who are yearning to demonstrate their capabilities. We want to have a balance dosage to propose a competitive team capable of lifting the trophy.”
