The Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Cameroon, SOGOC (under its flagship project, Action for Comprehensive Abortion Care, ACAC), and its partners have rolled out a campaign ahead of the International Safe Abortion Day to be marked on September 28.

This year, the International Safe Aborting Day will be celebrated under the theme “Abortion solidarity.”

Ahead of the day, SOGOC and ACAC media partners met and planned campaign messages and articles to be produced to mark the day.

On the occasion, the SOGOC executive represented by Dr. Anny Ngassam underscored the combined efforts of communities in the unwavering defense of the right to safe abortion care and reproductive justice.

“It is our imperative duty to recall that abortions carried out in precarious conditions contribute substantially to maternal mortality. According to World Health Organization statistics, around 25 million unsafe abortions are carried out every year—a tragically unacceptable figure,” Ngassam said.

Our mission within the Advocacy Project for Comprehensive Abortion Care is to work for a political paradigm shift, to educate the general public, and to offer unwavering support to guarantee universal access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare that meets the highest standards, she added.

SOGOC executives expressed gratitude to media organizations and SOGOC’s unfailing partners in the ACAC project. Although significant progress has been made, it remains a categorical imperative to persevere in abortion services that are safe and respect fundamental human rights.

She urged the media to take up the messages to conduct a major awareness-raising campaign ahead of September 28. Your essential role is to help shape public discourse and lift the veil of the stigma that still tarnishes this crucial issue.

Messages are shared to raise awareness of safe abortion and the consequences of unsafe abortions on Facebook and Twitter, amongst other platforms.
